Together for Girls Hosts Photo Exhibit at the UK Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict
June 6, 2014
From 10-13 June, the United Kingdom is hosting the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London. This event will be the largest gathering ever concerning this incredibly pressing issue.
As part of the event, Together for Girls, with support from two of its partners the U.S. government and BD (Becton Dickinson and Company), is hosting a photo exhibit entitled: Turning the Tide for Women and Girls: A Story in Photos. It features images from world-renowned photographers, capturing women’s and girls’ experiences of violence-both in and out of conflict-and some of the solutions to stop the global epidemic of violence. The exhibit will be on display for public viewing in the Summit Fringe space from 10-12 June, with a reception on Wednesday 11 June at 17:00.
Turning the Tide for Women and Girls showcases a series of 10 captivating photos-some heart-wrenching and others uplifting-which are meant to inspire action. In one we see a young mother and her son, who was born of rape, wandering hospital grounds alone, facing the stigma so often associated with surviving sexual violence. In another we see the expressions of great joy on the faces of children dancing in a rainstorm-children who have been separated from their families during conflict and are living in temporary shelters. Their ability to dance in the in the face of hardship is a feature of their great resilience.
It is in viewing such photographs and reflecting on the thoughts and emotions they evoke, that we witness both the destruction caused by violence in conflict-and the effects it has on children in particular-as well as the very real possibilities for ending this violence.
Co-chaired by British Foreign Secretary William Hague and Special Envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Angelina Jolie, the global summit will include theatre performances, discussion panels, interactive exhibits, films and more. The organizers hope to create and maintain much-needed momentum towards ending sexual violence in conflict, and practical actions to take on the ground.
