Communications Associate Job Description

Together for Girls (TfG) a public-private partnership working to break the cycle of violence, with special attention to sexual violence against girls. TfG partners include several private sector organizations led by BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), six UN entities, [UNICEF, WHO/PAHO, UNAIDS, UN Women, UNFPA and the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General on Violence Against Children], the U.S. Government [U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the CDC’s Division of Violence Prevention and USAID] and the Government of Canada. Several foundations and individual donors also provide funding to the partnership.


Working closely with national governments, our model focuses on contributing across three pillars of action:

  • National surveys to document the magnitude, nature and impact of physical, emotional, and sexual violence against children;
  • Evidence-based, coordinated policy and program actions in countries to address issues identified through the surveys; and
  • Global advocacy and public awareness efforts.


The TfG partnership, established in 2009, has grown exponentially, and is now active in over 20 countries, contributing to results across multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We are demonstrating that with the leadership of governments, the strong technical expertise and platforms of TfG partners, and a comprehensive multi-sector approach for implementation, progress toward breaking longstanding cycles of violence is achievable.


Position Overview

The Communications Associate will be an integral part of TfG’s small secretariat office and communications team of three, working under the supervision of the Communications Director and with the Senior Communications Officer. The Communications Associate will focus on expanding Together for Girls’ communications and advocacy work, including content creation, website management, high-level event support, and managing day-to-day administrative operations. The Communications Associate should have the ability to multitask, manage time effectively, and demonstrate strong teamwork, communications capabilities, and project management skills.


Responsibilities and Duties

  • Manages ongoing updates and creation of TfG materials working in collaboration with TfG’s design firm; tracks materials inventory; and coordinates distribution of materials;
  • Manages TfG’s quarterly newsletter content development, design and distribution
  • Coordinates the production of ongoing content for Safe, TfG’s digital storytelling platform, by sourcing and writing stories and contributing to the editing/revision process;
  • Provides event planning and execution support at annual conferences, launch events, symposiums, observances, etc.;
  • Assists with design for communications deliverables, including social media graphics, event signage and web pages as needed;
  • Develops written and visual content for grant reports to donors and quarterly/annual reports for TfG leadership and partners;
  • Supports Chief Operating Officer by managing administrative duties, including updating TfG’s event calendar, maintaining the TfG contact list, and additional administrative tasks, such as mailing, scanning, printing, etc.; and
  • Provides support to communications team on additional projects as needed.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • At least 1-2 years of communications experience
  • Demonstrate exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Be a self-starter with strong project management skills and the ability to work in complex, fast-paced environment
  • Possess superior interpersonal skills and willingness to work in a highly collaborative team environment
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing Microsoft Office, Adobe Suites and WordPress; experience in creative programs such as InDesign is a preferred
  • Language proficiency in Spanish, French and/or Swahili is a plus but not required



This position is full-time and based in downtown Washington, D.C. Relocation expenses will not be covered. Moderate travel may be required.
