Consultant for VACS Data Dashboard

Project background

Together for Girls (TfG) is a global partnership working to end violence against children and adolescents, particularly sexual violence against girls. The partnership pays special attention to the gendered dimensions of violence and its impact on health, education, and human rights. We envision a world where every young person is safe, protected, and empowered.

Violence against children is pervasive, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Violence is preventable, and change is possible. Through data, we can understand the drivers and risks of violence, which provides a unique opportunity to tackle the issue and build integrated responses.

Through the Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys (VACS), the Together for Girls partnership has data for over 12% of the world’s children and youth. We want to ensure this data is usable, useful, and used by all relevant stakeholders working to end violence against children, especially our partner organizations, who do not have their own dashboards.

Purpose and scope of the work

The VACS are the largest source of data on violence against children in the world. Although we partner with many large organizations within the violence against children space, the sector lacks an easy, single data resource that we can readily and accurately reference and use outside of PDF reports. We seek to develop the first-ever data dashboard that compares multiple types of violence across countries.

Together for Girls is looking for an individual consultant to create the VACS dataset that will feed into the data dashboard. This will involve extracting, cleaning, and preparing VACS reports' data for analysis.

The dataset will include violence against children indicators disaggregated by gender and age, available in the VACS countries' reports (Botswana, Cambodia, Colombia, Côte d’Ivoire, El Salvador, Eswatini I Eswatini II, Ethiopia (to be released March 2024), Haiti, Honduras, Kenya I, Kenya II, Lao PDR, Lesotho, Malawi, Moldova, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe I, Zimbabwe II).

The consultant will be responsible for extracting, cleaning, preparing, and storing data from 27 reports from 22 countries with about 30-40 variables of aggregate country-level data. This includes removing errors and transforming data into a format that can be analyzed (.xls and .csv)

Responsibilities and duties

  • Use automated tools to extract data from the primary source (27 VACS reports in PDF) and convert into a readable format
  • Create a database of all the extracted data from the 27 reports, using Excel or another statistical software program, such as R or Python
  • Using the list of 30-40 variables provided by Together for Girls, produce new datasets with the specific variables in the agreed format
  • Ensure data integrity by performing rigorous cleaning, error checking, and validation.

As a result of this consultancy, we expect to have two products:

Excel spreadsheet with all the data tables included in the 27 VACS reports

Excel spreadsheet with the selected indicators containing the VACS data to be used in the dashboard, formatted based on example provided by Together for Girls
