Section 3: Analyzing VACS data

3.3 Estimating the prevalence of violence in the VACS: How to construct violence variables

Welcome to Section 3.3 Estimating the prevalence of violence in the VACS: How to construct violence variables!

Amiya Bhatia, Associate Professor, Department of Social Policy and Intervention, University of Oxford

Amiya takes you through five steps to construct violence variables in the VACS. To estimate the prevalence of violence, you will need to define:

  1. The population violence is being measured among (e.g., young women)

  2. The types of violence you are interested in measuring (e.g., physical and sexual violence)

  3. The perpetrators of violence (e.g., violence from any perpetrator)

  4. The timing of violence (e.g., past year)

  5. The numerator and denominator of the violence variable being constructed
