Letter from the Editors

Dear readers,

Welcome to Safe, the first-ever digital magazine focused on the global epidemic of violence against children. Launched by Together for GirlsSafe tells the stories of the people, organizations and countries that work every day to combat the violence affecting one billion boys and girls around the globe.

In response to the world’s increased focus on the high rate of sexual violence endured everywhere from the United States and Brazil to Nigeria and India, Safe began as an antidote to hopelessness.

Through this online magazine, we share survivors’ inspiring stories and celebrate the hard work being done by organizations and individuals alike to address this complex problem. We also look at related issues affecting boys’ and girls’ well-being (that are also often causes or consequences of violence) like gender inequality, access to education, sexual and reproductive health, and other health issues, such as HIV/AIDS.

Many of the stories are written by young people, covering the issues they care about most and their vision for the future. Safe is, after all, meant to be a call to action. We hope you will connect with the extraordinary heroes who have discovered powerful solutions you want to get behind—whether they live nearby or can be given a boost through social media.

From our perspective, the most important thing any reader can do is keep the conversation around stopping violence alive and support the survivors who are brave enough to reveal their experiences. Silence breeds violence—so ending the shame and stigma around this issue is critical to survivors feeling safe to get help, reporting perpetrators (if they wish) and beginning to heal.

One way to do this is to share Safe with your friends and family. We hope that you find joy and comfort in knowing what the world is doing to end the suffering so many have experienced. And we encourage you to write us to tell us what else you would like to see featured in the (web) pages of Safe. E-mail us your ideas and feedback at
